Position Information:
- Oversees the daily activities of fleet services.
- Performs a wide variety of preventative maintenance and repair activities on gasoline, diesel equipment and large fire apparatus.
- Diagnoses malfunctions and accomplishes repairs in the shop or in the field as needed, such as repairing hydraulics, air brakes, transmissions, differentials, and clutches.
- Work involves skilled tasks in the mechanical repair and maintenance of automobiles, trucks, and related District equipment.
- May have primary responsibility for specialized maintenance and repair on specific systems, and performs general maintenance and repair on a variety of equipment, including small equipment.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must pass the pre-employment background check, drug test (including marijuana), and a DOT physical exam. Four (4) years of experience as a journey level mechanic with diesel, gasoline, and alternative fuel powered engines including use of modern diagnostic equipment; an Associate of Science Degree in Automotive Mechanics, Diesel, Automotive Tune-up or related degree and work experience as a journey level mechanic; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- A.S.E. Certifications in Auto and/ Heavy Truck series are desirable and must be obtained within 1 year of hire.
- Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification is desired but not required, the District will pay for this certification for a successful candidate, subject to longevity/employee retention requirements. Incentive pay is available.
- Possession of a valid Oregon license and the ability to meet District driving standards. Must possess a CDL within 1 year of hire. Possession of other certificates, registrations and/or licenses mandated by law.
- Must possess own hand tools sufficient to perform the duties of the position, including up to 1/2 inch drive, up to 1 1/8 standard and 22mm metric. Specialty tools and a District vehicle will be provided by the District. Prior experience working on fire apparatus and ambulances is preferred. Perform proper preventive maintenance and safety DOT inspections.
- Secure, clean, repair and service shop facility, equipment and tools.
Essential Job Functions
- Perform general repair and preventative maintenance on heavy, medium and light duty motor vehicles and equipment, including fire apparatus, and equipment with diesel, gasoline, water and air-cooled engines.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
- Perform adjustments and repairs to brakes, ignition and lighting systems, cooling and heating systems and other vehicle and equipment systems or components.
- Perform structural repair and fabrication employing a variety of welding techniques.
- Inspect, adjust, and replace parts including but not limited to all internal and external engine, drive train and electrical components, couplings, hydraulic pumps, cooling systems, fuel and exhaust systems; inspect and repair electrical systems; repair starters, generators and alternators.
- Use proper diagnostic procedures to repair all types of automotive and truck air conditioning and heating systems including proper handling of refrigerants.
- Maintain a variety of two and four cycle engines: repair chain saws, pumps, small power plants, and mowers.
- Test Fire Pumps, aerial ladders and all sub systems on fire apparatus.
