We are establishing a 24-month eligible list for the Deputy Fire Marshal I position! When vacancies occur during the life of the list, the top candidates on the eligible list will be invited to participate in the selection process. The Deputy Fire Marshal I perform inspections of all types of existing occupancies and installed fire protection systems for compliance with adopted code and ordinances. This position also delivers educational and special programs to the general public and target audiences both internal and external to the District. Additionally, the Deputy Fire Marshal I conducts assigned fire and other investigations and assist in developing far reaching programs necessary to carry out the District's fire prevention programs. The ideal Deputy Fire Marshal I candidate has a high level of customer service; effectively communicates and interacts with individuals and groups in a variety of capacities throughout the District; and has the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.


Example of Duties:

The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to, the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Occupancy inspections
  • Fire protection system inspections • Inspection finding reviews
  • Prepares written and electronic inspection reports, correction notices, notices of violation and other correspondence
  • Delivers educational, informational and training programs
  • Maintains work schedules, records and reports in written and electronic formats

An associate or higher level degree in fire administration, prevention, engineering or science, or a closely related field is required.



  • Three or more years experience working as a Fire Inspector or closely related position.
  • Additional Fire, Building, Mechanical, and Electrical Code experience, training or certification is strongly preferred.



  • ICC Fire Code Certification - ICC Fire Inspector I
  • Must possess and maintain recognition by Oregon State Fire Marshal's Office as Fire & Life Safety Specialist I by the completion of one (1) year of employment.
  • Fire Investigation experience, training or certification is strongly preferred.
  • Public Education experience, training or certification is strongly preferred.
  • Valid driver's license and maintain a driving record insurable by the District's insurer.

Minimum Requirement Review: Pass/fail review of application in relation to minimum requirements. All successful applicants will be invited to participate in the assessment center.


Assessment Center:

The on-site assessment center will consist of the following components: - Interview Exercise (25%) - Inspection Exercise (25%) - Presentation Exercise (25%) - Written (Letter composition) (25%) Candidates must score 60% or above on each component within the assessment center to be placed on the eligible list. Any score tie-breaker required for eligible list rank will be the application submission time and date stamp.

VETERANS PREFERENCE: It is the District's policy to provide eligible veterans with preference as required by law. For any qualifying veterans passing the assessment center, preference points will be added to the final weighted score.

SCHEDULE: The assessment center is planned for the week of February 28 – March 4, 2022, at the TVF&R South Operating Center located in Wilsonville, Oregon. These dates will be finalized once we have reviewed the minimum qualifications and have a concrete number of qualified applicants. Candidates should plan to spend approximately three (3) hours for the assessment. The assessment schedule will be set after the closing date and will be communicated by email to the qualified candidates.

ELIGIBLE LIST: Candidates who pass the examination will be placed on a ranked civil service eligible list, which lasts as long as twenty-four (24) months. When vacancies occur during the life of the list, the top candidates on the eligible list will be invited to participate in the selection process.

COVID CONSIDERATIONS: All candidates and evaluators will be required to follow District procedures. This includes masking and social distancing. All surfaces will be sanitized after each candidate.
