General Roles and Responsibilities

This position is emergency response in nature with other firefighters and EMS responders to emergency and non-emergency incidents. Their role is emergency incident scene management, apparatus response and equipment assignments. This position performs emergency medical functions up to the Scope of Practice level and within Fire Departments approved treatment protocols. This position performs the duties of a firefighter at the scene of emergency and other duties as assigned by a higher-ranking Officer. Assist with the training of all personnel. This full-time position is paid on a salary basis with overtime eligibility.

 

Supervision Received and Exercised

• Position functions under the direction of the Fire Chief or their designee
• Supervisory functions are not a normal expectation of this position. The incumbent may provide general guidance to temporary laborers and volunteers as necessary and assigned.

 

Knowledge and Skills Required

Minimum Education

• High School Diploma / GED

MINIMUM POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

• Minimum of one (1) years’ experience as a firefighter
• Driver’s License Valid in the State of Oregon
• NFPA Firefighter 1
• NFPA Driver
• NFPA Haz-Mat Operations
• ICS 100 / 200 / 700 / 800
• Emergency Medical Technician

MUST OBTAIN WITHIN ONE (1) YEAR OF APPOINTMENT:

• NFPA Firefighter II
• NFPA Pumper Operator
• NWCG FF Type 2

MUST OBTAIN WITHIN TWO (2)YEARS OF APPOINTMENT

• NFPA Instructor 1

ICS 300 Knowledge of:

• Firefighting/Emergency Medical Services
• Computer literate in Word, Excel, Adobe and other commonly used software.
• Record Keeping

• Fire/EMS Response – Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service; perform firefighting, emergency medical, rescue, extrication and hazard mitigation activities within training, certification, department protocols and applicable laws.
• Incident Operations and Safety – Participate in incident command system operations, scene size-up, hazard identification, accountability, patient care and other assigned emergency operations; follow established safety procedures and maintain situational awareness.
• Equipment and Apparatus – Inspect, maintain, clean and prepare fire apparatus, EMS equipment, tools, protective equipment and facilities for operational readiness; identify and report deficiencies or safety concerns.
• Reports, Records and Communication – Prepare accurate and timely incident, patient care, inspection and other required reports and records; communicate effectively with department personnel, other agencies, patients and the public.
• Training and Department Operations – Participate in required training, drills, continuing education, certification activities and station operations; perform routine station, facility, grounds and vehicle maintenance necessary to maintain a safe, clean and operational department.
• Community Risk Reduction – Participate in fire prevention, public education, community outreach, inspections, pre-incident planning and other Community Risk Reduction activities as assigned. Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those a firefighter encounters while performing the Essential Functions of this job. This position performs tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues that may be infectious. While performing the duties of this job, the firefighter regularly works in outside weather conditions and assists traumatized individuals. The firefighter frequently works near moving mechanical parts with exposure to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, requiring the firefighter to work while wearing self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), or other safety devices, risk of electrical shock and vibration. The firefighter occasionally works in high precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, except during certain firefighting or EMS activities when noise levels may be loud and hearing protection required as permissible.

 

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the Essential Functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the firefighter is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers to handle or operate objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The firefighter is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; distinguish colors and smells. The firefighter must frequently lift and or move up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.

 

Work Schedule and Availability

The typical work week consists of five consecutive eight-hour shifts or four consecutive ten-hour shifts as determined by need and assignment. Occasionally required to work outside normal hours and respond to after-hours situations, to be available on an on-call basis, or as assigned by supervisor. This position requires:

• Dependable, regular and punctual attendance to ensure the efficient delivery of emergency services and compliance with City policies and the Employee Handbook
• Availability for on-call duty to respond to operational issues or emergencies
• Prompt response to call-outs, including after-hours situations
• Occasional overtime, depending on specific conditions, maintenance needs, or emergencies Safety and Compliance Work is performed in accordance with established safety practices, City policies, Fire Department policies and procedures, applicable laws and regulatory requirements and recognized fire and EMS safety standards.

Employees are expected to safely operate and maintain vehicles, apparatus, equipment and tools; properly select, use, inspect and maintain required personal protective equipment; follow established safety procedures, operational protocols and incident command directives during emergency operations; maintain situational awareness and accountability; follow established procedures for emergency medical care, hazardous materials, infection and exposure control and other identified workplace hazards; and promptly report unsafe conditions, injuries, exposures, equipment deficiencies and other safety concerns.
