Purpose of Position:

To help the district create an asset inventory using specialized online software. This position works under

the direction of the Manager. The Work Study Intern will learn invaluable information about Water Treatment and Delivery systems and infrastructure.


Distinguishing Characteristics:

The Work Study Intern is a temporary position for 12 weeks between June 12th, 2024 and September 18th, 2024. The position calls for approximately 25 hours a week as well as a project end presentation to the board.


Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities -Under general direction of the Manager:

The Work Study Internship duties include but are not limited to:

GIS Mapping:

  • Digitize existing maps and paper records into GIS software.
  • Update and maintain geographic data layers.
  • “Ground Truth” infrastructure with GPS unit in the field.


Asset Management Plan Development:

  • Collect and organize data on water district assets
  • Input and maintain asset data in Excel spreadsheets.


Asset Inventory:

  • Utilize specialized online software for creating and updating the asset inventory.
  • Conduct thorough reviews of existing asset records (both digital and paper) to ensure completeness and accuracy in the inventory.
  • Coordinate with field staff to verify asset details and conditions.
  • Update the inventory system with new assets and changes to existing assets as needed.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Document methodologies and processes used in map creation, asset management, and inventory tasks.
  • Prepare progress reports and presentations to keep stakeholders informed of project status and findings.
  • Ensure all documentation is organized and accessible in both digital and physical formats if required.


Collaboration and Communication:

  • Collaborate with different departments, such as engineering, operations, and finance, to gather necessary data and feedback.
  • Participate in team meetings and training sessions to enhance project outcomes and personal development.
  • Seek feedback and clarify requirements with supervisors to ensure alignment with water district goals and standards.


Minimum Qualifications

Ability to:

  • Ability to interpret and visualize data.
  • Basic understanding of mapping concepts and spatial analysis techniques.
  • Conduct research as necessary to obtain information for maps, spreadsheets, and database.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Excel and its data management functions.
  • Perform mathematical calculations.
  • Understand and follow all safety rules and procedures established for work areas.
  • Maintains work areas in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Use computer software and hardware required.
  • Work independently to solve problems, and seek assistance if and when required.
  • Communicate effectively with co-workers, read and write well.


Mandatory Requirements: Must be a current Freshman, Sophomore, or Junior in a 2 year or 4 year college program with plans to attend in the fall. Ability to read and write in English. Willingness to learn, attention to detail in a busy office.

Desirable Requirements: Basic proficiency with GIS software (such as ArcGIS, QGIS, etc.). Experience or familiarity with database management or asset management software is advantageous. Excel skills highly desirable. A college level Grade Point Average of 3.5 or better.


Physical Demands of Position: While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, communicate, reach, and manipulate objects, tools, or controls. The position requires mobility. Manual dexterity and coordination are required over 50% of the work period. Much of the data entry to take place at a standing desk. 20% of the work will be completed in the field.


Working Conditions: Usual office working conditions. The noise level in the work environment is typical of most office environments.


Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervision is not a function assigned to this position.

Supervision Received: Works under the general supervision of the District Manager.


Education and Training: Current student of a 2 or 4 year college. Must have High School Diploma or GED.
