Limiting Your Liability Exposures: Reasonable Suspicion Education & Safety Regulation Updates

Reasonable Suspicion Education

Drug-Free Workplace
This two-hour training, presented by Don McCloskey of Bio-Med Testing Service, Inc, is designed to help personnel identify, confront, document, and test employees who may be under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.

Topics include:

  • The effects of alcohol and drugs in the workplace
  • The role of the supervisor in a DOT testing program
  • Signs, symptoms, and behavioral indicators of the DOT 5 prohibited drugs

Drugs and Alcohol Misuse:

  • Prohibited behavior and prescription drug use
  • How to recognize and document performance using the behavior observation checklist
  • How to apply the four steps of constructive confrontation
  • How to handle employee defense strategies

What to do when:

  • An employee refuses to be tested
  • A supervisor receives hearsay information
  • An employee discovers a suspicious substance
  • An employee leaves the worksite without authorization after being identified as unfit for duty

About the Speaker
Bio-Med Testing, Inc.’s Clinical Manager, Don McCloskey, brings eight plus years of outstanding service and experience in the field of Drug Testing Operations. His contributions to Bio-Med Testing include his extensive experience in Occupational Drug Testing Operations and Procedures as well as his excellent relations in working with Medical Review Officers and their client base. Additionally, Don consults and educates our client base and industry colleagues on current and new Federal Regulations and State Laws governing Drug Testing while overseeing all phases of our Clinical and Field Operations.

Don’s certifications include: OSHA Safety and Health Management, OSHA Safety Committee Operations, Certified BAT Master Instructor, and Collector Train the Trainer.

Safety Committees
All employers are affected by the recent changes made to safety committee rules under OAR 437-001-0765. Scott Neufeld will help attendees gain an understanding of a safety committee’s seven essential duties, how to determine who will serve on the committee, and the requirements of holding regular safety committee meetings. Join us to learn how to implement the new requirements and limit your district’s liability exposure.

About the Speaker
Scott Neufeld is SDAO’s Loss Control Manager. He conducts loss control surveys, assists with training programs, reviews safety programs, and assists members with OSHA compliance. He has been in the Loss Control/Risk Management field for eleven years.
Scott worked as a Loss Control Specialist for Salem Area Mass Transit where he was in charge of their workers’ compensation, property and liability claims, drug and alcohol, and safety programs.

Scott graduated from Oregon State University in 1997 with a degree in Environmental Health and Safety with an option in Occupational Safety.

Defensive Driving - How to Avoid Being In A Traffic Crash

This four-hour class is designed for the professional who wants a refresher on basic driving skills, techniques, and knowledge to keep pace with current training, literature, and technology. The class also incorporates various advanced strategies, coupled with some fundamental laws of physics to challenge even the most experienced of drivers. DPSST Course Certification available for firefighters.

An interactive discussion will take place among the following topics and more:

The primary instructor for this training is Gary G. Miller. Gary retired in August after spending 27 years in the Patrol Services Division of the Oregon State Police. Gary was the Assistant Director of the Patrol Services Division upon retirement and spent most of his career either reconstructing traffic crashes or managing the Collision Reconstruction Program for the Department. He has testified as an expert witness in many counties in the state where he has reconstructed over 60 traffic fatalities that resulted in criminal prosecution and over 600 other crashes. He has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Wildlife Science from Oregon State University and has received accreditations from Northwestern University, the University of Northern Florida, and Texas A&M University, and is a nationally accredited Crash Reconstructionist.
